A fuel cell is an electrochemical device for the direct conversion of the chemical energy of a fuel into electricity. Microbial breakdown of waste can similarly be harnessed to produce electricity instead of just heat. The system to be described has myriad applications but it is particularly adaptable to the developing world where an electrical grid is often absent.
