Effective July 13, 2008, Massachusetts employers face mandatory treble damages (three times the actual damages awarded) for any violation of the Massachusetts Wage Act-even if the employer makes an honest mistake. As if that were not enough, Massachusetts policymakers are considering other bills that could radically alter the way companies do business in the commonwealth by narrowing of employer access to the criminal records of job applicants, mandating seven paid sick days, paid family and medical leave, and continued implementation of Health Care Reform.
