Personalized Medicine, the use of genetic and genomic information to predict, prevent and treat disease, has the promise “to transform medicine from ‘one-size-fits-all’ to a personalized approach delivering the right treatment to the right patient at the right time - every time” declared Michael O. Leavitt, secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services in 2007.

Healthcare providers are already using genetic testing to identify DNA variants that predispose some people to certain diseases. If the genetic determinants of efficacy or adverse events can be identified, a standard-of-care drug or therapeutic treatment that might be ineffective or cause serious adverse event could be replaced with a personalized treatment based upon an individual’s genotype.

Although personalized medicine holds tremendous promise to transform medical research, drug discovery, clinical trials, product development, data management, clinical informatics and medical practice, there exist many challenges for life sciences companies, regulatory authorities, healthcare providers and service organizations before realizing the potential of PM.

The MDG Forum on Personalized Medicine will address the value proposition for Personalized Medicine along with important issues and challenges in a roundtable discussion with Dr. Patrice Milos, Dr. Colin Brenan, and Dan Rippey, experts in the field of personalized medicine, lead by David Hendren, General Partner, Catalyst Health Ventures who has invested in companies in the business of personalized medicine.
