Wednesday, October 22, 2008, 6:30pm - 9:00pm
Boston-IA will present Mike Paciello, co-chair of the United States federal committee - often referred to as "The Section 508 Refresh Committee - that has been charged with creating the latest version of the federal government's Section 508 technical accessibility standards. Mike will report on the work of this committee and the final proposal this committee presented to the federal government for approval in April 2008.
TEITAC
Mike Paciello was appointed co-chair to the United States Federal Access Board's Telecommunications and Electronic and Information Technology Advisory Committee (TEITAC) during the summer of 2006. Since then, TEITAC has been working on an optimized version of the accessibility technical standards. This expert group of national and international constituents used the existing U.S. federal standards - Section 508 (E&IT) and Section 255 (Telecommunications) - as a baseline to create a universal model standard featuring interoperability, usability, and harmonization. TEITAC presented a historic series of internationally harmonized recommendations on April 3, 2008 that will bridge the gap between technology and people with disabilities.
Presentation
Mike's presentation examines the key themes and results of the TEITAC standard. The session questions the very heart of the TEITAC charter:
* Has TEITAC delivered on its promise to create a harmonized set of international standards that model accessibility, usability, and interoperability?
* Will this model pave the way towards achieving third wave, pervasive accessibility?
