Linking Geospatial Data to Business Intelligence
from Data Management Association (DAMA) - Boston Chapter

Friday, October 24, 2008, 9:00am - 12:00pm
Geospatial information systems (GIS) operate in a significantly different paradigm from the traditional tabular databases which most IT professionals are familiar with. Most data warehouse (DW) and business intelligence (BI) operations continue in this tabular mode, where, for instance, data from various sources are associated by their identifiers (e.g. foreign keys).
Spatiality (where things are located) can be terribly important in many kinds of business analysis (retail marketing, school district planning, and tracking of crime and disease). Moving data and information between the two paradigms (BI and GIS) can be challenging.
This presentation explains how the two paradigms are different, and how data is stored in geospatial databases, and how associations are created. For example, customer locations may be geocoded and then plotted on a map of the city, overlaid with census data, and the demographic characteristics assigned by area of residence of the customer or potential customer. These demographic attributes can then be ported back into the BI environment for stratification and other evaluation.
This material has been presented in a half-day class at The Data Warehousing Institute; a Colloquium for students and faculty at the School of Business & Management at La Sierra University; and the annual TechEd Conference in Ontario, CA.
